On June 23, the first session of the summer course, , was held. Professor Jae-Seung Lee introduced the major issues shaping contemporary Europe and the European Union. Students explored a wide range of political, economic, and security challenges facing Europe today, including the war in Ukraine, NATO and European security, transatlantic relations, and Europe’s pursuit of strategic autonomy.

The lecture also examined Europe’s role in the Indo-Pacific region, economic challenges, and relations with China, highlighting the complex balance between human rights, economic interests, and geopolitical competition. Other key topics included refugees and migration, the European Green Deal and net-zero transition, and the ongoing energy crisis. Finally, students discussed the EU’s engagement with the Korean Peninsula and considered how Europe responds to evolving global issues. Through these discussions, participants gained a broader understanding of Europe’s position in international politics and the challenges that will shape its future.
