On July 7, the eighth session of the summer course, was held. Professor Jae-Seung Lee examined the geopolitical implications of the Russo-Ukrainian War and its impact on the European security order. Students explored the historical origins of the conflict, including the post-Cold War security environment, NATO enlargement, Ukraine’s evolving relationship with the West, and the competing perspectives that have shaped the war since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

The lecture also analyzed how the war has transformed European geopolitics and transatlantic relations. Students discussed the evolution of the battlefield, the growing role of drone warfare, changes in U.S. and NATO policy, and Europe’s efforts to strengthen its strategic autonomy through enhanced defense cooperation, energy diversification, and long-term sanctions against Russia. The session highlighted the challenges facing the European Union as it seeks to balance security, economic resilience, and unity among its member states.

In addition, the session examined ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and the obstacles to achieving a lasting peace. Students explored the positions of Russia and Ukraine, the role of third-party mediators, and the broader implications of the war for international order, sovereignty, and global security. Through these discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of how the Russo-Ukrainian War continues to reshape Europe’s strategic landscape and influence the future of international politics.
