On July 9, the tenth session of the summer course, , was held. Professor Euichan Shin examined the politics of borders and migration in Europe, exploring the balance between the European Union’s principle of free movement and the challenges posed by migration, border management, and national identity. Students learned about the Schengen Area, the abolition of internal borders, and the EU’s efforts to manage its external frontiers while maintaining freedom of movement among member states.

The lecture also explored the evolution of European migration policies in response to humanitarian crises, labor mobility, irregular migration, and asylum seekers. Students discussed the concept of “Fortress Europe,” the Common European Asylum System, and the political debates surrounding burden-sharing, border security, and the integration of migrants and refugees. The session highlighted how migration has become one of the most significant issues shaping domestic politics and policymaking across Europe.

In addition, participants examined the relationship between migration and identity politics, including the rise of populist movements, concerns over national sovereignty, and the social and political implications of multiculturalism. Through these discussions, students gained a deeper understanding of how migration continues to influence European integration, democratic governance, and the future of the European Union.
