On July 13, the eleventh session of the summer course, , was held. Professor Young Jang explored the origins of European economic growth by examining the historical development of modern economic systems and the factors behind Europe’s rise during the Industrial Revolution. Students learned about the Great Divergence between Europe and Asia, the transition from pre-industrial economies to modern economic growth, and the characteristics that distinguished Europe’s economic transformation from earlier periods of development.

The lecture also examined the major explanations for the Industrial Revolution, including the influence of the Enlightenment and scientific progress, the role of institutions and property rights, the shift from organic to mineral energy, demographic changes, and Britain’s abundant coal resources and technological innovation. Students discussed how these factors contributed to sustained productivity growth, structural economic transformation, and Europe’s emergence as the world’s leading industrial region.

In addition, the session traced Europe’s economic development through the Great Depression, post-war reconstruction, and the "Golden Age" of growth following World War II. Students explored the establishment of international economic institutions, the impact of the Marshall Plan, and the challenges confronting the European economy today, including declining competitiveness, technological rivalry, demographic change, and industrial policy. Through these discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of the historical foundations of European economic growth and the opportunities and challenges shaping Europe’s economic future.
