On July 14, the twelfth session of the summer course, was held. Professor Young Jang examined the relationship between European integration and globalization, focusing on the economic and social consequences of expanding international trade and migration. Students explored the historical development of the first wave of globalization during the nineteenth century, the factors that facilitated greater economic integration, and the role of free trade, technological innovation, and international institutions in shaping global markets.

The lecture also analyzed the benefits and challenges of globalization through the experiences of Europe and other regions. Students discussed how trade and migration contributed to economic growth, market integration, and higher productivity, while also creating unequal outcomes across different social groups and industries. The session examined the historical rise of mass migration, the economic forces driving migration, and the political backlash that led to increasing protectionism and immigration restrictions.

Finally, participants considered the contemporary implications of globalization for Europe, including anti-immigration sentiment, and the resurgence of economic nationalism. By examining both the opportunities and the discontents of globalization, students gained a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between economic integration, migration, inequality, and policymaking in Europe and beyond.
