On June 24, the second session of the summer course, , was held. Professor Jae-Seung Lee introduced the history, structure, and key characteristics of the European Union. Students learned about the origins of European integration after World War II and the contributions of the founding figures who envisioned a peaceful and prosperous Europe. The lecture also covered the EU’s symbols, official languages, enlargement process, and candidate countries.

As one of the world’s largest economic and political unions, the EU promotes cooperation among its 27 member states through common institutions, laws, and policies. Students explored the development of the single market, the euro, the Schengen Area, and educational programs such as Erasmus+, which facilitate the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital across Europe. The session also highlighted the EU’s efforts in areas such as climate action, digital transformation, social welfare, consumer protection, and international development.

In addition, participants examined the EU’s institutional framework, including the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Court of Justice. Through these discussions, students gained a comprehensive understanding of how the European Union functions and how it balances cooperation among member states while addressing common economic, social, and political challenges.
