On June 25, the third session of the summer course, was held. Professor Jae-Seung Lee introduced the history of European integration, tracing the development of the European Union from the aftermath of World War II to the present day. Students learned about the political and economic motivations behind European integration, the contributions of the EU’s founding fathers, and the gradual process of building a unified Europe through regional cooperation.

The lecture explored the major milestones of European integration, including the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community, the Treaties of Rome, the creation of the common market, and successive rounds of EU enlargement. Students also examined the evolution of key treaties, such as the Single European Act, the Maastricht Treaty, the Amsterdam Treaty, and the Lisbon Treaty, which strengthened the EU’s institutions, expanded cooperation among member states, and introduced the euro and the single market.

Finally, the session discussed the challenges that have shaped the European Union in recent decades, including the global financial crisis, Brexit, migration, security issues, the war in Ukraine, and cyber threats. Through these discussions, students gained a deeper understanding of how European integration has evolved over time and how the EU continues to adapt to new political, economic, and security challenges.
