On June 29, the fourth session of the summer course, , was held. Professor Namkook Kim examined the relationship between Europe and East Asia by comparing the historical development of European integration with regional cooperation in East Asia. Students explored how the European experience provides valuable insights into the opportunities and limitations of regional integration in East Asia.

The lecture discussed the key factors that contributed to the success of European integration, including the shared vision of peace after World War II, the convergence of national interests, and favorable international circumstances during the Cold War. Students also learned about the roles of major European leaders and institutions in transforming historical rivalries into long-term cooperation through gradual political and economic integration.

In addition, the session analyzed East Asia’s regional landscape by examining organizations such as ASEAN, APEC, and the East Asia Summit, while comparing their development with that of the European Union. Students discussed the political, historical, and security challenges that distinguish East Asia from Europe, including competing national interests, historical legacies, and regional power dynamics. Through these discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences between the two regions and the prospects for future regional cooperation.
