On July 2, the seventh session of the summer course, , was held. Professor Joo Hee Kim introduced Germany’s political system and its evolving role in Europe, examining how the country is responding to economic, political, and geopolitical challenges. Students learned about the institutional foundations of the Federal Republic, including the Basic Law, federalism, coalition politics, and the constitutional safeguards designed to protect democracy after World War II.

The lecture also explored the transformation of Germany’s party system, focusing on the decline of the traditional catch-all parties, the rise of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), and the growing fragmentation of German politics. Students examined the 2025 federal election, the challenges facing Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s coalition government, and the social, economic, and regional factors that have contributed to changing voting patterns and the emergence of new political divisions.

In addition, the session discussed Germany’s leadership within the European Union amid multiple domestic and international challenges. Students analyzed Germany’s economic transformation, energy transition, migration policy, security strategy following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and its role in shaping the future of European integration.

Through these discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of how Germany is adapting to structural changes while balancing its domestic priorities with its responsibilities as one of Europe’s leading powers.
